How to: Change the IRQ for a legacy device.
Solution:
In the 'Control Panel' window, double-click the 'System' icon and click the 'Device Manager' tab. Select the 'Computer' icon and click 'Properties'. Record the unused interrupts. Remove the adapter card from the base unit and set the jumpers on the card to reflect the new IRQ.
CAUTION: This task exposes the computer internal circuitry to electrostatic discharge and possible damage. It should be performed by a qualified service technician.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
3) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)

4) Click the 'Device Manager' tab. (The 'Device Manager' tabbed page appears.)
5) Select the 'Computer' icon.
6) Click 'Properties'. (The 'Computer Properties' dialog box appears.)
7) Select the 'Interrupt request (IRQ)' radio button. (The interrupt assignments and hardware device names appear in the list box.)

8) See which interrupt settings are not assigned by noting which numbers are missing from the list of settings.
9) Click 'OK' to close the 'Computer Properties' dialog box.
10) Click 'OK' to close the 'System Properties' dialog box.
11) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Close' to close the 'Control Panel' window.
12) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
13) Select 'Shut Down...'. (The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box appears.)
14) Select the 'Shut down the computer' radio button and click 'Yes'.
15) Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cables.
16) Remove the base unit cover.
17) Remove the adapter card.
18) Move IRQ jumpers to an available IRQ according to the manufacturer's instructions.
19) Replace the adapter card.
20) Replace the base unit cover.
21) Reconnect the power cables and turn on the computer.
22) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
23) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
24) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)

25) Click the 'Device Manager' tab. (The 'Device Manager' tabbed appears.)
26) select the 'View devices by type' radio button.
27) Double-click the 'Computer' icon to expand the list of components.
EXAMPLE: Double-click 'Sound, video and game controllers' to view the list of multimedia devices on the computer.
NOTE: For drive devices (such as floppy drives, hard drives, and CD-ROM drives), the IRQ value is assigned to the driver controller and not the drive itself. To locate the proper controller for a drive, select 'View devices by connection' radio button, and browse the controllers listed until the you find the specific drive.
28) Double-click on the desired device. (The '<device> Properties' dialog box appears, where <device> is the name of the selected device.)
29) Click the 'Resources' tab.
30) Select 'Interrupt Request' from the 'Resource settings' list box.
31) Clear the 'Use Automatic Settings' check box.
32) Click 'Change Setting...'. (The 'Edit Interrupt Request' dialog box appears.)
33) Select the interrupt which you set the jumper to in the 'Value' box.
34) Click 'OK' to select a new interrupt and close the 'Edit Interrupt Request' dialog box.
35) Click 'OK' to close the '<device> Properties' dialog box. (The 'System Settings Change' dialog box appears.)
36) Click 'Yes' to restart the computer.
37) Run a program that uses the adapter card to confirm proper operation.
